Transferring a domain name is not like selling a bicycle on Craigslist. Domains are purely digital intangible assets governed by international registry protocols. Once an authorization code (EPP key) is transferred and a domain is moved to an offshore registrar, reversing the transaction is virtually impossible without years of litigation.

Whether you are closing a $500 deal or a $50,000 asset transfer, understanding how domain escrow works is your only insurance against sophisticated online fraud.

Why PayPal, Venmo & Stripe Are Dangerous for Domain Sellers

The most common mistake new domain sellers make is accepting payment via traditional merchant gateways like PayPal or credit cards. The buyer receives the domain transfer code, confirms the transfer, and then two weeks later files a chargeback claiming: "Unauthorized transaction - my credit card was stolen."

Payment processors almost always side with the cardholder in disputes involving intangible digital property. The seller loses both the cash and the domain. Never use standard payment gateways for high-value domain transactions.

Beware of the "Spoofed Escrow" Scam

A buyer approaches you agreeing to your asking price without any negotiation. They say: "Great! Let's use EscrowSecurityPay.net to close the deal."

The site looks sleek, professional, and displays fake security badges. You create an account, transfer the domain code, and wait for the wire. The wire never arrives—because the escrow site was created three days prior by the scammer.

The Golden Rule: Only Use Established, Licensed Escrow Services

  • Escrow.com: The gold standard, licensed and regulated under US financial escrow laws.
  • Dan.com / Sedo: Major domain marketplaces with automated integrated escrow checkout.

Registrar Account Push vs. EPP Transfer

When executing a sale, there are two distinct ways to deliver the domain:

  • Internal Account Push: Both parties have accounts at the same registrar (e.g. GoDaddy or Dynadot). The transfer occurs instantly without the 5-7 day waiting period or the 60-day ICANN transfer lock. Ideal for quick closings.
  • External EPP Authorization Code: The domain moves from the seller's registrar to the buyer's registrar. The buyer provides the auth code to their registrar, which initiates the transfer. This can take 3 to 7 days to fully resolve across registries.

Checklist Before Releasing Domain Credentials

Never unlock a domain or email an authorization code until the escrow platform explicitly marks the status as "Buyer Funds Received & Secured in Escrow". An email notification alone is not enough—always log into the official escrow platform directly in your browser to verify the funds status.
